MUCH BETTER ELVIS

alt

You Don’t Know Me / Big Boss Man (RCA)

INFINITELY better than PRESLEY’S last two releases, which were complete throw-aways and didn’t deserve to get off the floor.

This is different – a country ballad you’ll probably have heard before, intimately and tenderly sung by El, with a very slow lilt rhythm, humming from the Jordanaires and a Cramer-type tinkling piano.

I still don’t rate this as the best he can do, but it’s a vast improvement on recent discs, and on a par with “Love Letters.” Could well restore him to the chart – despite the excessive surface crackling!

FLIP : But if you prefer El in rocking, hip-swivelling mood, this is the track for you. A compelling, finger-clicking, rock ‘n’ roll performance with a decidedly dated sound.
